E-mail is sent using the standard SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) whose specifications originally derived from the RFC 821 ("SMTP") dating back to 1981 and later updated by RFC 1869 and 1870 ("SMTP Service Extensions") and RFC 2821. SMTP delivery capabilities in Mailware systems are entrusted to the open source software Postfix, software that can provide a highly stable framework for the provision of the standard Messaging features. Here are the main reasons for this choice: Postfix supports the default Mailbox format and with appropriate configuration changes, even the Maildir format. It natively interfaces with different authentication methods It can be integrated with the main Antivirus / Antispam products Supports various methods of mail-processing such as a Content Filter and Policy Delegator It is widely used on systems like Enterprise and its wide dissemination ensures availability of documentation and ongoing support from the Open Source community. Access to the mailbox is defined by the POP3 and IMAP4 protocols respectively described in RFC 1939 and RFC 2060. For the provision of such services the software Open Source Courier IMAP will be used, which also has a wide application and is under constant update. Access to electronic mail service, in the presence of the appropriate SSL certificates, can also take place through secure protocols POPS / IMAPS. The server supports IMAP Shared Folder.

The Webmail interface allows you to quickly sort the entire visualized folder by state (to do / normal), sender, subject, date and size by simply clicking on the column of interest. This feature is particularly efficient thanks to the use of AJAX technology.

A flexible search web interface is based on the specific backend of Mailware’s IMAP functionalities. To normal search options (folder, subject, sender, recipient) you can add a time interval, label, or search through the full text of the message.

Each email has its own importance in a particular context. We developed a labeling system: six colored labels, each with an individually configurable color and name. The label can be used to highlight or classify emails (eg. Staff, Jobs, ...). Every email can be identified in more than one category, using up to six labels.

One of the most "dynamic" features of the suite is the ability to move messages from one folder to another by simply dragging the mouse. You select the message you want to move and drag your mouse over the destination folder.

Mailware supports Shared IMAP Folders: you can share with other users the folders in your mailbox, both default and personal ones. For each folder you can specify which users have access, either read-only or read / write: in the first case, users will see the contents of the shared folder without being able to modify it, in the second case they will be able to delete messages, move, etc. The user enabled to access a certain folder will see it as a local one.

For those who use the Microsoft Outlook client, calendar information is stored locally and generally synchronized via MAPI protocol on the Microsoft Exchange Server. Outlook users can access Bedework by syncing personal calendar events with those on Bedework. The synchronization is done via a plugin for Outlook that interfaces with the Funambol server via SyncML. The data stream will be as follows: Outlook / Plugin →Funambol → Bedework. The advantage of this architecture is that the calendar feature can also be accessed offline and then synchronized with the Server Mailware / Bedework at every access to the system. From Outlook you can configure the Free / Busy calendar information when defining a meeting or event, if the persons concerned have published their availability information.

It is possible to create personal calendars, which will be added to the default version. This allows you to divide appointments / meetings from a logical point of view: one calendar for business events, one for family events and so on.

Ejabberd is the most widely used open-source software that provides instant messaging services. While eJabberd is focused on the management of a single large domains with many users, Babel has modified it by implementing a multi-domain service. The server supports all the features of instant messaging: access to the service, user's presence, contact list (also called a "roster"), and import / export of the contact lists. The service is accessible via a multi-tab web chat or via jabber client. From a stand-alone client, you can also transfer files to users of the platform. We are also developing a multi-protocol support towards external networks (MSN, Jabber).

Mailware allows you to manage your contact list and chat to divide your contacts into groups. When you create a new contact you can specify the group (eg family, work, ...) it belongs to, thus keeping together contacts of the same area.

Directly from the Web contact list it is possible to import vCards (. Vcf), the most common format used for exchanging "digital business cards." This will make it possible, upon receiving a vCard from a user, to automatically import it into your address book. The repository for all users is based on Fedora Directory Server LDAP. This allows a centralized user management and the creation and definition of personalized service classes; for each class the appropriate parameters that characterize the level of service provided to users for the differentiation of system use limits (quota, quota warning level, the maximum message size, enable the chat service) can be assigned. Different Service Classes (COS) are intended to assign different privileges and different service levels for different categories of users for the provided services.

Mailware allows you to create Distribution Lists (Mailing Lists) by which you can group and represent a desired number of users. When creating a Mailing List, an owner will be assigned, as well as a specific policy regarding the way in which the list can be accessed and used by system users. The presence of the Policy provides a high level of flexibility in the behavior of the list and the presence of an owner can help management decentralization. The owner will be the only one to have the right, except for the domain administrator, to add or remove users from the group. The policy determines the level of restriction you want for a list.
